Martin Scorsese may be considered one of the most influential directors of our time. During his 40-year career he has directed classic films such as Goodfellas, Casino, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York.

Scorsese was born in Flushing, New York. Both his parents worked in the garment district. Growing up, Scorsese was often sick with asthma and spent a lot of time alone watching movies. He seriously considered joining the priesthood before going into film. In 1964 he graduated from New York University film school where he would later teach Oliver Stone and Spike Lee.

His work often explores the gritty and the obscure. 1976’s Taxi Driver portrayed the dark life of a cabbie. 1995’s Casino showed Las Vegas’ mob-run underbelly. His background and interest in street life is a perfect fit for The Departed, which explores both the State Police as well as an Irish mob in Boston.

Although he directed Ellen Burstyn and Robert DeNiro to Oscars, and Raging Bull won one for editing, Scorsese has never won one for himself.
